Can You Pressure Wash a Brick House or Building?

One of the best ways to clean exterior surfaces is by pressure washing. But if the property is made of brick, is this a safe method to use?

Pressure washing your brick home or business is both safe and effective — as long as you follow a few key tips.

Keep the Pressure Low

While pressure washing is a great way to clean dirt and grime from bricks, too much force can cause damage. High pressure can erode the grout, leaving the bricks loose.

To avoid damage, start low with a 500 PSI setting. Then, gradually increase the pressure as needed. Avoid exceeding 2,000 PSI.

Don’t Stand Too Close

It’s important to remember that the proximity of the spray nozzle affects pressure.

Standing too close will deteriorate the bricks and grout, in addition to preventing proper rinsing. Choose a small test area on the back of your home to determine the proper distance.

Avoid the Use of Caustic Substances

Certain cleaning chemicals can quickly destroy your brick’s exterior, allowing water to penetrate the bricks. This produces mold growth, causing direct damage to the property.

To prevent damage, avoid using muriatic acid, ammonia, or drain cleaners. Additionally, you should always hire professionals to pressure wash your home or business. Professionals will know which cleaners are safe and effective to use on brick.
